The Township of Fairfield, located in the state of New Jersey, lies in the western most portion of Essex County along the Passaic River, bordered by both Passaic and Morris counties..
The Township is 10.58 square miles in area. It is comprised of residential homes, a large business and industrial base, as well as the Essex County Airport (aka Caldwell Airport). The residential population is estimated at 7,500. However, the daily population has been estimated to be as much as 60,000.
State Highway Route 46 and Interstate Route 80 divide the Township and provide for easy access to New York City which lies approximately 22 miles to the east.
The Township's Police Department was established in 1937 when the municipality was known as Caldwell Township. In 1962, the Township's name was changed to Fairfield as was the Police Department's.
