The Fairfield Police Department announces the retirement of Lieutenant Richard Filipow from active duty with the agency on March 31, 2017. Lt. Filipow joined the department on February 5, 1996. Prior to joining, he served with the Oradell Police Department from June 1992 until November 1993 and then with the East Hanover Police Department from November 1993 until February 1996.

Lt. Filipow served many years as a detective in the Investigative Division. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant on June 13, 2005 and to the rank of lieutenant on October 13, 2009. He served as the department's domestic violence liaison officer and was most recently the commanding officer of the department's honor guard.

Amongst his many accolades and accomplishments, Filipow was one of two Fairfield officers who found an apprehended John DiLoreto in the parking lot of the Fairfield Executive Inn in April 1998 only hours after DiLoreto allegedly shot a gas station attendant in cold blood in Pompton Plains, N.J.

"Lt. Filipow was an extremely bright and energetic command staff officer who was extremely well-respected amongst all of our members and an individual that I deeply relied upon for counsel. He will be greatly missed" said Chief Anthony G. Manna. The members wish him well in his retirement and all his future endeavors.
