Lincoln Park Man Arrested After Motor Vehicle Pursuit
Fairfield (NJ) The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrest of George Smith (50) of Lincoln Park, N.J. for two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding police, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of stolen property, possession of hypodermic syringes and possession of drug paraphernalia on March 16, 2014.
At approximately 10:02 A.M., Officer Christopher Nicholas was monitoring traffic traveling east on Route 46, near the Montville border, when he allegedly observed a 2002 Dodge Durango with no license plates displayed. The officer followed the vehicle as it exited Route 46 East and abruptly pulled into the parking lot of 125 Clinton Road. As he pulled behind the Dodge and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle immediately pulled away, went back out onto Clinton Road and then onto Route 46 East, followed by the officer.
The suspect’s vehicle continued on Route 46 East. It is alleged that near Two Bridges Road, Smith deliberately rammed two marked Fairfield police cars being operated by Sergeant Daniel Dias and Officer Brian Holzmann in a further attempt to elude the police. At this point, Smith’s vehicle suffered a flat front driver’s side tire but he continued to attempt to elude police and eventually drove into Lincoln Park from Two Bridges Road. His vehicle ultimately became disabled in the wooded area off of Lincoln Boulevard. He then led officers on a brief foot pursuit before being apprehended. During the foot pursuit, Fairfield police officer Steven Ptaszynski was injured when he slipped on ice. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and later released. Smith was also transported to a different area hospital, under police guard, for evaluation for injuries sustained during the incident.
The 2002 Dodge Durango was found to have been reported stolen to the Rockaway Police Department on February 24, 2014. Officers from the Wayne, Lincoln Park, North Caldwell and Essex Fells Police Departments responded to assist.
(It should be noted that the charges against Smith are merely allegations and that he is presumed innocent until if/when he is convicted or pleads guilty in a court of law)
