Virginia Man Arrested for Weapon Offenses at Hotel

Fairfield (NJ) The Fairfield Police Department announcesthe arrest of Matthew Grant (45) from Spotsylvania, Virginia for a variety of weapons offenses on July 7, 2026. On that date, at approximately 2:19 AM, Fairfield police officers were dispatched to the Ramada Inn, located at 38 Two Bridges Road, to conduct a welfare check of a male who appeared to be passed out and lying on the floor in one of the hallways. It was reported that the male also had lacerations and may need medical assistance.

Upon arrival of the officers, they allegedly found him in the same condition that was reported to include lacerations and abrasions to the back of his head and arms. They also allegedly discovered that he was in possession of a Sig Sauer P250, 40 caliber handgun holstered in his waistband. The weapon was immediately seized and was found to contain prohibited hollow point bullets and an illegal high capacity magazine.

Upon awaking Grant, it is alleged that he was highly intoxicated and either refused to tell officers or could not remember as to how he ended up in his current conditionand location. He was placed under arrest and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Upon his release from the hospital, he was transported to Fairfield police headquarters for processing.

Further investigation revealed that, although Grant has a valid concealed carry permit issued by the State of Virginia, it is unlawful for him to carry his handgun in the State of New Jersey to include hollow point bullets and a high capacity magazine. During the investigation, officers discovered Grant’s 2015 Toyota Sienna, parked in the lot of the hotel. With the assistance of an Essex County Sheriff’s Department K-9 that is trained in gun powder detection, an open air sniff of Grant’s vehicle was conducted. The K-9 gave a positive indication for the presence of gun powder. As such, the vehicle was impounded until detectives could obtain a search warrant.

Grant was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow point bullets and possession of a prohibited high capacity magazine. He was eventually transported to the Essex County Jail pending an initial appearance in the Superior Court.

(It should be noted that the charges against Grant are merely allegations and that he is presumed innocent until he either pleads guilty or is found guilty in a court of law)
