The department goes to great lengths to try to keep its officers physically, mentally and financially healthy in a profession that has a lower than average life expectancy. The Health and Wellness Unit is responsible for this undertaking. Each year, officers are required to undergo both and extensive cardio-pulmonary screening and eye examination. In addition, they receive ongoing instructional training in tactical combat casualty care, mental health awareness training, nutrition and planning for their financial future. The Health and Wellness Unit also arranges for optional physical fitness training days and self-defense classes.
