Vacant home check

The Fairfield Police Department knows that many of our residents often take vacations or go on trips and that during these times, they have concerns about the safety of their homes. These are often times when residences are most vulnerable to burglary. Because we want you and your family to enjoy yourselves while on vacation and away from Fairfield, we will check on your home for you. When you are away for a short period of time, we will check your house on a daily basis. For longer periods, like when residents go south for the winter we will check them every few days.

The following are good practices to adhere to when you are away:

  • Put lights on timers so it appears as though someone is home

  • Have your mail picked up by a friend or neighbor, don’t let it pile up

  • Leave a car in the driveway if possible

  • If you have an alarm, make sure it is working properly

  • If you have security cameras, make sure they are working properly and you know how to use them

  • Make sure has keys to access your home

In order for us to conduct vacant home checks, you can contact the Fairfield Police Department at (973) 227-1400 or you can fill out the below request and submit it to us electronically. When completing this electronic request, please remember to include the following required feilds:

  • Name

  • Email Address

  • Address

  • Phone number where you can be reached

The following information should be included in the additional info section at the bottom of the form:

  • Emergency contact information of someone who may have a key to your house and contact number

  • Dates when you will be away

  • Types of cars that will be in the driveway

  • Location of lights that will be left on and/or on timers

  • Anyone who might be accessing the property while your away
