Firearms

Firearms purchases are governed by New Jersey State Law under Chapter 58 of the 2C Criminal Justice Code. To purchase any type of firearm in New Jersey, a person must possess a firearms identification card (FID card). To specifically purchase a handgun, a person must also possess a Permit to Purchase a Handgun (PPH). Only one handgun may be purchased every thirty (30) days unless an exemption is granted. As of 02/18/19 applications for the following firearms related matters will be done on-line through the following New Jersey State Police website:

*Initial Firearms Purchaser Identification Card

*Permit to purchase a Handgun

*Lost or stolen Identification Card

*Mutilated Identification Card

*Change of Address on Identification Card

*Change of Sex on Identification Card

*Change of Name on Identification Card

This process will be for both new and returning applicants.

 

STEP 1- Go to the website: www.njportal.com/NJSP/fars

 

STEP 2- When prompted, enter the Fairfield Police Department’s ORI: NJ0070400 This ensures that the application is filed electronically with Fairfield. Note: If a wrong or non-existent ORI is entered in error, the application will be miss-routed or lost and you may be required to re-file and pay any applicable fees a second time.

 

STEP 3- Complete the on-line application. You may complete the application using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop or desktop computer. When completing the application, you will need to enter the correct e-mail addresses of two (2) references. The references may be family members.

 

STEP 4- Any fees for the FID or PPH documents must be paid PRIOR to the application being processed. Non-refundable payment is required to be made prior to the completion of the background as per NJAC 13:54-1.4. New FID cards are $5.00 and PPH’s are $2.00 each (cash only at this time, a receipt will be issued). These fees as well as any fees for fingerprinting/SBI212A checks are set by the State of New Jersey There is no charge for replacement FID cards.

You will be receiving automated email updates throughout the process.

Once the application/background is complete and approved, you will receive an e-mail. A Department representative will contact you when your documents are ready to be picked up.

The FARS system will e-mail your references questions to be answered. Your references can complete the questions using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop or desktop computer. Please advise them to complete the questions as soon as possible to progress you background investigation.

The on-line application process is applicant driven. Please ensure that you have correctly entered the best contact phone numbers for both yourself and your references as well as the best e-mail addresses.

Please note that fingerprinting is required for new applications or applications for Change of Sex on an existing Firearms Identification Card.

Returning applicants only: You will be filing an SBI212A as part of the application process. Do not file for the SBI212A, then begin the FARS application. You will have to pay a second time and fee is not refundable.

Fees for firearms documents are set by the State of New Jersey. Fees for fingerprinting services are set by the vendor providing the service and are not determined or collected by the Fairfield Police Department.
