West Orange Resident Arrested for Driving While Intoxicated Following Motor Vehicle Stop

Fairfield (NJ) The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrest of Matias Pineyro-Rodriguez (22) of West Orange, NJ, for driving while intoxicated on May 28, 2023. On that date at approximately 2:14 am, Officer Ryan Cleary was on patrol when he observed a gray Nissan Altima enter Route 46 East from the Two Bridges Road off-ramp travelling at a high rate of speed. Officer Cleary was able to catch up to the vehicle and conduct a motor vehicle stop. It is alleged that the vehicle abruptly crossed three lanes of travel before coming to stop on Route 46 East in Wayne, NJ.

Officer Cleary spoke to the driver and only occupant of the car, who was identified as Pineyro-Rodriguez. While speaking with Pineyro-Rodriguez, Officer Cleary allegedly observed signs and symptoms consistent with someone who may be under the influence, to include the inability to follow directions, slow movements, and an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle.

Based on the totality, field sobriety testing was conducted and Pineyro-Rodriguez was subsequently placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. The vehicle was impounded pursuant to NJ law. Located in the vehicle were several open containers of alcohol.

Pineyro-Rodriguez was transported to headquarters for processing. It is alleged that Pineyro-Rodriguez refused to provide breath samples for testing purposes, which is required in the state of New Jersey. In addition to driving while intoxicated, Pineyro-

Rodriguez was also charged with refusal to submit to breath testing, having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, and several other motor vehicle violations. Pineyro-Rodriguez was later released pending a June 8, 2023 appearance at the Fairfield Municipal Court.

(The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.)
